Basement Bathroom Renovations built right the first time.

A finished basement bathroom is one of the highest-value additions to a Mississauga home, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Rough-in drainage, below-grade waterproofing, and ventilation all have to be done right or the cost shows up later. We have built hundreds of bathrooms across the GTA since 2004.

What's Actually Involved

What a basement bathroom renovation really looks like.

A basement bathroom is one of the more complex projects in a home. You are working below grade, often with rough-in plumbing that is 20 or 30 years old, and every decision about drainage, waterproofing, and layout has to be made correctly the first time. Here is how we approach it.

Basement bathroom waterproofing and plumbing rough-in in Mississauga

Rough-in plumbing: the starting point

Most Mississauga homes built before 1990 have a basement rough-in: a capped drain and water supply lines stubbed into the concrete floor, waiting for a bathroom that was never finished. If your home has this, you are in good shape. We open the concrete, extend the drains to the correct locations, and connect to your existing stack.

If there is no rough-in, we core-drill the slab, install a new drain line with the proper slope to the stack, and backfill with concrete. This is a bigger job, but it is done routinely in Mississauga's older detached housing stock. We use licensed plumbers for all rough-in work, not general contractors who do plumbing on the side.

Waterproofing below grade

Basement shower walls have a higher moisture risk than above-grade bathrooms because the surrounding soil holds moisture year-round. We never tile over standard drywall below grade. Shower walls get cement board or Wedi board, with a full Schluter Kerdi membrane on every seam. The shower pan is either a pre-formed Schluter tray or a custom mortar bed with Kerdi on top. Same waterproofing system on every shower we build, not an upgrade.

Ventilation and moisture management

Basements do not have the natural air circulation of upper floors. A bathroom exhaust fan that vents directly outside (not into the ceiling cavity) is essential. We install a proper exterior-vented exhaust fan as part of every basement bathroom build. If the panel needs an additional circuit for the fan and lighting, our licensed electrician handles it as part of the project.

For flooring, we recommend large-format porcelain tile over wood-look vinyl in basement bathrooms. Porcelain handles below-grade moisture far better over the long term. We use Mapei Kerapoxy epoxy grout in all wet areas. It does not absorb water, does not stain, and never needs sealing.

The vanity and fixture decisions

Basement ceiling heights in older Mississauga homes often run 7'6" to 8', enough for a comfortable bathroom but not for a soaker tub. Most basement bathrooms we build are a shower, toilet, and vanity. We help you choose a layout that maximizes the space and feels like a proper bathroom, not an afterthought.

Three Decisions That Shape the Project

The choices we walk you through before work starts.

These three decisions determine the scope, timeline, and cost of your basement bathroom. Each one is reviewed in detail at the consultation.

Basement bathroom plumbing rough-in
No. 01

Existing rough-in or new rough-in

If your basement already has a capped rough-in, drain and water supply lines stubbed into the floor, the project is significantly simpler and less expensive. If there is no rough-in, we core-drill the slab and install new drain lines, a bigger job done routinely. We assess existing conditions on the first visit before quoting.

No. 02

Walk-in shower or tub-shower combo

Most basement bathrooms in Mississauga are built shower-only, a walk-in shower, toilet, and vanity. Ceiling heights and space constraints usually make a tub impractical. If the basement is a primary living space (in-law suite or rental unit), a tub-shower combo can make sense. We give an honest read on what works in your specific layout.

No. 03

Standard finish or full ensuite quality

A standard finish uses builder-grade fixtures, ceramic tile, and a basic vanity, functional and clean. A full ensuite quality finish uses the same materials as an above-grade ensuite: large-format porcelain, quartz top, frameless glass, premium fixtures. Costs more, adds meaningfully more to home value.

Port Credit Mississauga basement bathroom renovation

Port Credit detached: basement bathroom from rough-in

A Port Credit homeowner had a capped rough-in that had been sitting unused for 15 years. We extended the drains, built a curbless walk-in shower with Schluter Kerdi waterproofing, installed large-format porcelain throughout, and added a floating vanity with quartz top. The result looks and feels like a proper ensuite, not an afterthought.

Erin Mills Mississauga basement bathroom remodel 2025

Erin Mills two-storey: basement bathroom upgrade

An existing basement bathroom from the early 2000s with ceramic tile, a fibreglass shower insert, and a builder-grade vanity. We stripped it back to the studs, installed proper Kerdi waterproofing, large-format tile throughout, a frameless glass enclosure, and a new vanity with quartz top. The space went from dated to genuinely impressive.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

How do I know if my basement already has a rough-in?

+

Look for capped pipes in the concrete floor, typically a 3" or 4" drain pipe and two smaller water supply lines (hot and cold) sticking up from the slab, usually in a corner or along a wall. If you are not sure, we will check during the initial site visit. Most Mississauga homes built after 1970 have at least a partial rough-in.

Can you add a basement bathroom where there is no rough-in?

+

Yes. We core-drill the concrete slab, install new drain lines with the proper slope to connect to your main stack, and backfill with concrete. It is a bigger job than working with an existing rough-in, but it is done routinely in Mississauga's older housing stock. All concrete work and restoration is included in the project scope.

How long does a basement bathroom renovation take?

+

Using an existing rough-in, we typically complete the full bathroom (plumbing connections, waterproofing, tile, vanity, fixtures, and glass) in 10 to 14 working days. A project requiring a new rough-in adds 3 to 5 days for concrete work and curing. A specific written timeline is provided before work starts.

Do you handle plumbing and electrical, or do I hire other trades?

+

We handle everything. The project includes licensed plumbers and licensed electricians as subcontractors under our coordination. One company, one contract, one point of contact from start to finish.

What waterproofing do you use in basement showers?

+

We never tile over drywall in a wet area. Shower walls get cement board or Wedi board with a full Schluter Kerdi membrane on every seam. The shower pan is either a pre-formed Schluter tray or a custom mortar bed with Kerdi on top. For grout we use Mapei Kerapoxy, an epoxy grout that does not absorb water and never needs sealing. Standard on every shower we build, not an upgrade.

Is your work warrantied?

+

Yes. We provide a 2-year workmanship warranty on all installations. Bathroom Renos Inc. carries $2M commercial general liability insurance and is WSIB registered.
