Planning Your Renovation

What to Know Before Renovating Your Mississauga Bathroom

Condo Renovations: The Approval Process

If you own in the Square One corridor or any Mississauga condo, your first step isn't picking tile. It's reviewing your condo declaration and getting board approval. Most buildings require bathroom renovations to go through an alteration request. You'll need to submit plans, confirm work won't affect structural elements or shared systems, and post a security deposit.

Building management outlines noise restrictions. Typically no work before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. on weekdays. We handle these conversations with condo boards regularly, so you won't be caught off guard.

Detached Homes: Permits and Inspections

Renovating in Port Credit, Lorne Park, or Erin Mills requires a building permit from the City of Mississauga if you're moving plumbing, changing electrical circuits, or modifying structural elements. We pull permits on every project and coordinate all required inspections.

Budget Reality for Mississauga Bathrooms

A bathroom renovation in Mississauga typically costs between $12,000 and $35,000+. A minor refresh runs $12,000–$18,000. A mid-range renovation with new plumbing layout lands at $20,000–$28,000. Premium renovations with heated floors or custom tile can exceed $35,000.

The biggest cost drivers are plumbing relocation, tile work, and finishes. We break down exactly where your money goes, and you'll never be surprised by hidden charges.

Licensed Trades: What It Really Means

A licensed plumber has passed trade exams, carries liability insurance, and must follow Ontario plumbing code. ESA-certified electrical work means your circuits have been installed safely and inspected. WSIB insurance means if someone is injured on your job, it's covered. These credentials cost money, but they're why homeowners choose us over unlicensed handymen.

Scope & Scale

Understanding Your Renovation Options

Complete Gut Renovation

Strip the bathroom down to studs, reconfigure plumbing and electrical, install new waterproofing, retile, and finish with all new fixtures. Ideal if you want to completely reimagine the space.

Condo Bathroom Renovation

Work within the constraints of condo buildings. Board approvals, limited noise windows, shared wall considerations, and elevator access. We know how to navigate these challenges.

Tub-to-Shower Conversion

Replace a bathtub with a walk-in shower. Popular for aging in place, modern aesthetics, or saving space. Requires new plumbing rough-in and custom waterproofing.

Custom Tile & Finish Work

Keep existing plumbing and layout but update with new tile, flooring, vanity, lighting, and hardware. A great option if your bathroom's bones are solid.

The Critical Layer

How Bathroom Waterproofing Works

Water is the enemy of a bathroom. It doesn't just sit on your tile. It finds cracks, seeps behind walls, and rots the framing and subfloor. That's why waterproofing is non-negotiable.

Schluter Kerdi is the system we use on every single project. It's a thin, flexible membrane that goes behind tile in wet areas. We install Kerdi directly over drywall or cement board, sealing every seam with waterproofing tape. Then tile is installed directly over the Kerdi using modified thin-set mortar. The result is a continuous, impermeable barrier.

Why Schluter Kerdi specifically? It's thin (doesn't eat into wall space), flexible (moves with the building rather than cracking), and tested to withstand decades of moisture exposure.

What about shower pans? We use either pre-fabricated shower pans or pour custom mortar beds with integrated slope and Kerdi waterproofing. Either way, water drains properly. Never pooling or seeping into the subfloor.

Grout isn't waterproof. We use epoxy or urethane grout in wet areas because it resists moisture better than cement grout. Waterproofing is what protects your home.

Ventilation matters too. After a shower, moisture needs to escape. We install or upgrade exhaust fans vented to the outside and ensure your bathroom breathes properly.

When we quote your bathroom, waterproofing isn't an add-on. It's built in. Every project, every time.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation in Mississauga?

If you're relocating pipes, changing electrical circuits, or modifying structural elements, a building permit from the City of Mississauga is required. We pull permits on 90% of our projects. The process takes 1–2 weeks and adds about $500–$1,000.

How long does a bathroom renovation typically take?

A complete renovation usually takes 3–5 weeks. Plumbing and electrical rough-in (1 week), waterproofing and substrate (3–4 days), tile work (5–7 days), finishing (3–4 days), and inspections (2–3 days). Condo projects may take slightly longer due to building restrictions.

I own a condo in Square One. What do I need to know?

Review your condo declaration, get board approval, post a security deposit, and coordinate elevator booking for material deliveries. Most buildings restrict work hours. We've done dozens of Square One condos and handle all conversations with building management.

What's the difference between porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone?

Ceramic: Softer, affordable ($1–$3/sq.ft.), good for walls. Porcelain: Harder, denser, less porous ($2–$6/sq.ft.), excellent for bathroom floors and showers. Natural stone: Beautiful, luxurious ($4–$10+/sq.ft.), requires regular sealing. We use porcelain for 80% of bathroom floors.

What does your warranty cover?

We warranty all labour and materials for one year from completion. This covers plumbing leaks, electrical function, grout cracking, tile issues, and workmanship defects. Manufacturer warranties on fixtures are registered for you.
