What's Actually Involved

What a Tub-to-Shower Conversion Really Looks Like

It's not just "rip out the tub." Done right, it's a structured project that touches plumbing, drainage, waterproofing, tile, glass, and finishing. For the shower area alone, with the rest of the bathroom left as-is, we can complete the work in about 5 days.

Shower substrate and Schluter Kerdi waterproofing in progress

Demolition and Plumbing Rough-In

The tub comes out. The drain location for a tub usually doesn't sit where a shower drain belongs, so a licensed plumber repositions the drain rough-in, often two to three feet over depending on the new layout. The shower mixer valve typically gets relocated higher up the wall, and we add proper shutoffs.

If you have an older home in Mineola or Lakeview, expect to find galvanized supply lines or cast-iron drain stacks behind the wall. We replace any of that we touch with copper or PEX (supply) and ABS (drain), so you don't end up with a leak six months after the reno.

Waterproofing: The Layer That Matters Most

We never tile over drywall. For wet areas we use proper substrates designed for moisture: DenShield, cement board with a Schluter Kerdi membrane installed over it, GoBoard, and in some cases Wedi board. Every seam is sealed with Kerdi-Band waterproofing tape. The shower pan is either a pre-formed Schluter tray or a custom-poured mortar bed with Kerdi waterproofing on top. The result is a continuous, impermeable barrier behind your tile.

Tile and grout aren't waterproof on their own. The membrane is. This is the single most important detail in any tub-to-shower conversion, and it's where corner-cutting contractors quietly skip steps to save a day.

Finished curbless walk-in shower

Tile, Grout, and Finish

Once waterproofing is tested, tile installation begins. For most Mississauga residential conversions we use 12×24 or larger porcelain on the walls and a smaller mosaic or pebble for the shower floor (better grip, easier slope). We can also use any mosaic tile paired with Mapei Kerapoxy grout for a 100% watertight, long-lasting result. Niches for shampoo and soap get built into the wall framing during demo, then waterproofed and tiled with the rest.

For shower grout we use Mapei Kerapoxy, a stain-resistant epoxy grout. It costs more than cement grout and takes a bit longer to install, but it doesn't absorb water, doesn't stain from soap and shampoo, and never needs sealing. On a wet wall you want grout that performs as long as the tile does.

Glass enclosure goes in last, after tile cures. Frameless glass is the cleanest look. Semi-frameless costs a few hundred less and looks nearly identical. Fixed panel ("fixed-glass walk-in") is the most affordable and works well in tighter spaces.

The Decisions That Shape the Project

Three Choices You'll Make Before Tile Goes On

These three decisions drive 80% of how the finished shower looks and how much it costs. We walk you through each one before any work starts.

Curbless walk-in shower

Curb vs. Curbless

A traditional shower has a small tile curb (~4") at the entrance. Curbless means the floor is flat from the bathroom into the shower: easier to clean, more accessible, and visually larger. Curbless requires the subfloor to be lowered or the shower floor to be built up so it slopes to a linear drain, so it's a slightly bigger structural job. Worth it for most homeowners we work with.

Linear drain installed on Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane

Linear vs. Centre Drain

A linear drain sits along one wall, lets you slope the floor in one direction, and works perfectly with large-format tile (no four-way slope cuts). A centre drain is more traditional and requires four small slopes meeting in the middle, fine with smaller tile or mosaic. Linear drains cost a bit more but solve a lot of installation problems.

Walk-in shower with framed glass enclosure, marble-look tile, decorative band, and stainless body-spray panel

Glass Enclosure Type

Frameless: the cleanest look, ½" tempered glass, no metal trim. Most expensive. Semi-frameless: same glass, a slim header bar at the top, costs less, looks nearly identical. Fixed-panel: a single sheet of glass with no door, paired with a curbless walk-in shower, minimalist and the most affordable, great for smaller bathrooms.

Aging in Place

Designing for the Next 20 Years, Not Just Today

Modern walk-in shower with hand-held shower on slide bar, frameless glass, white subway tile and mosaic floor

A meaningful share of our tub-to-shower conversions are driven by mobility. Maybe you've already had a close call stepping over the tub, or you're planning ahead so the home still works for you in 15 or 20 years. The good news: a well-designed walk-in shower can be both modern-looking and quietly accessible.

What we plan for, even when you don't ask: solid 2x6 blocking inside the walls during framing so grab bars can be added later without ripping out tile. Curbless entry. A built-in tile bench at seating height. Hand-held shower head on a slide bar. Lever-handle taps instead of knobs. None of this adds significant cost when it's done at the framing stage.

What Buyers Look For (If You're Thinking About Resale)

A common worry: "Will removing my only tub hurt resale value?" In Mississauga's residential market, the answer for most homes is no, as long as another bathroom in the home still has a tub. For a primary ensuite or main bathroom in a two-storey detached, buyers strongly prefer a generous walk-in shower over a builder-grade tub-shower combo.

The exception: a single-bathroom bungalow with no tub anywhere. If you have young children or buyers might, keeping at least one tub in the home is sensible. We'll give you our honest read on whether your specific layout supports a tub-to-shower conversion or whether to keep the tub in this bathroom and move the shower upgrade elsewhere.

Heated Floors While You're at It

Since the floor is already coming up for the conversion, this is the cheapest moment to add electric radiant heat under the tile. About $1,500 to $2,500 added to the project for a typical bathroom. Almost everyone who adds it tells us it was worth it, especially for the cold January mornings in Mississauga.

Port Credit primary bathroom conversion with walk-in shower and white vanity

Port Credit Detached: Primary Bath Conversion

A retired Mississauga couple wanted to age in place without leaving the home they raised their kids in. We removed an awkward 1980s tub-shower combo, rerouted the drain, built a curbless walk-in with a linear drain, and added blocking for future grab bars. Large-format porcelain, an antique-style vanity, and a frameless fixed-panel glass enclosure finished it off.

Timeline: 2 weeks  |  Investment range: $19K to $24K  |  What changed: drain relocated, subfloor lowered for curbless entry, new heated floor

Erin Mills primary ensuite walk-in shower conversion with framed glass enclosure

Erin Mills Two-Storey: Primary Ensuite (2025)

A young family used the corner soaker tub maybe twice a year and resented the wasted square footage. We pulled the tub, opened the wall to a stud-out remodel, built a generous walk-in shower with a built-in bench, niche for shampoo, and warm-gold fixtures against Carrara-look porcelain. The kids' bathroom down the hall still has a tub for the little ones.

Timeline: 2 weeks  |  Investment range: $24K to $28K  |  What changed: full demo to studs, plumbing reroute, frameless glass, heated floor, custom niche

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a tub-to-shower conversion take?

For just the shower area itself (we don't touch the vanity, floor, or paint), we can complete a tub-to-shower conversion in about 5 days. That covers tub removal and demolition, drain reroute and plumbing rough-in, waterproofing with proper substrate and Schluter Kerdi membrane, tile installation, Kerapoxy grout, and the new mixer and shower head. Glass enclosure is measured on the last day and installed about a week later once it's manufactured. If the project also includes a new vanity, flooring, or full bathroom repaint, plan for 1 to 2 weeks maximum.

Will removing my only tub hurt resale value?

In most Mississauga residential homes, no, as long as another bathroom in the house still has a tub. Buyers strongly prefer a quality walk-in shower in a primary ensuite. The exception is a single-bathroom bungalow with no other tub; in that case we'd discuss whether to keep the tub here and convert another shower instead. We'll give you an honest read for your specific home.

Do I need a permit for a tub-to-shower conversion?

For a standard tub-to-shower conversion that stays within the existing plumbing footprint, a permit usually isn't needed. Significant changes, like adding a brand-new bathroom or relocating major plumbing, can require one. We always recommend confirming with the City of Mississauga or your local municipality before any work starts, and where paperwork is required, we handle it for you.

What's the difference between curbless and low-curb?

Curbless means the floor flows directly from the bathroom into the shower with no step at all. Achieves a flat threshold by lowering the subfloor or building up the bathroom side. Low-curb uses a small ~2" tile threshold to define the wet zone and contain water, simpler structurally and slightly cheaper. Both work well; curbless is more accessible and visually opens up the bathroom.

Can you add grab bars or other accessibility features?

Yes, and we recommend planning for them even if you don't install them today. We add solid 2x6 wood blocking inside the walls during framing. That means grab bars can be screwed into solid wood later without anchor hardware, and you can wait to choose finishes that match a future remodel. We can also build in a tile bench, lever-handle taps, hand-held shower on a slide bar, and a low or curbless threshold.

How do you waterproof the new shower?

We never tile over drywall in a wet area. For shower walls we use proper substrates: DenShield, cement board paired with a Schluter Kerdi membrane, GoBoard, or in some cases Wedi board. Every seam is sealed with Kerdi-Band waterproofing tape so the assembly is continuous. The shower pan is either a pre-formed Schluter tray or a custom mortar bed with a Kerdi membrane on top. For grout we use Mapei Kerapoxy, an epoxy grout that doesn't absorb water and never needs sealing. Tile and grout don't waterproof anything; the membrane and the substrate do.

Bathroom Renos updated our basement bathroom (Dec 2025), gutting it down to the studs, replacing moldy drywalls, retiling the shower, floor and backsplash. They worked with us to re-use the existing sink and toilet. Nestor was very helpful and assisted us with choosing the tiles and the quantity. His staff was detailed in the work and we're very happy with the result and Nestor would show up frequently to inspect the work. We were so pleased, we asked him to install a bathroom fan on our main floor washroom. Thanks Nestor and team.

Nestor and his team at Bathroom Renos fully renovated our bathroom in January 2025. From our first meeting through completion of the work everyone involved was professional, courteous and responsive to our requests, ideas and on-the-fly adjustments to the project plan. The crew took great care to ensure the work space was kept clean and tidied up at the end of each day. The finished bathroom is both beautiful and a joy to use. Bathroom Renos deserves a 10/10 for exceeding our expectations.

With recommendation from neighbours, we arranged for Bathroom Renos to quote and ultimately chose them to fully renovate our main bathroom. Nestor gave us a very competitive quote and was very accommodating on schedule and provided good ideas on designs and supplier recommendations. The work Nestor and his team performed was excellent with great attention to details. I was also pleased that they installed proper waterproof membranes and backer boards in our new walk-in shower. Each day they put out mats to protect floors throughout the home and ensured the working area was clean and neat. During the project, we made a few minor changes and improvements and Nestor was always happy to oblige our changes. When the job was completed, we liked the work so much that we had his team come back and renovate our basement bathroom to install a deeper tub with new tile. Nestor was very engaged on a daily basis throughout our entire project and was quick to deal with any surprises or issues we encountered. And most importantly, he stands by his work and has graciously returned to support a minor warranty issue we encountered. We highly recommend Bathroom Renos to our friends and family who are also considering him for their projects.

Nestor and his team are really good at their craft. Not only that, they are really good at estimating how much it will cost as well and also give you options you can choose from depending on your budget.

We had our bathroom renovated a bit, with shower floor tiles changed and they did a great job with sealing the floor first, proper grout and making the floor tiles properly working so the water does not accumulate anywhere.

The suggestions they made for which tiles to get depending on our needs also worked so well. Finally, we needed a support bar installed and that is also done right to the measurement.

10/10 will hire them again if and when we need to.

Two months ago we hired Nestor and his team to do a major bathroom renovation repairing a hole in the floor, tiling the floor, walls and shower enclosure, installing an exhaust fan (which required making a hole in the wall of the house) and new toilet, vanity and taps. Every evening the workplace was cleaned up and all equipment and tools were tidied. The workmen were quiet, polite and never intrusive and Nestor himself was attentive and very helpful at resourcing all the extra hardware needed (tiles, hinges, etc.). All the work was completed on time and within the budget estimate. It was all very professional and we were very pleased with the final results.
